Andrei Chikatilo was born in a Ukraine village called Yablochnoye, in 1936. He was born with nearsightedness along with lasions and water in his brain. During his childhood there was a great famine in the USSR and also a war with Germany. This caused Andrei to grow up in at a time where starvation and death were a common occurrence.
He grew up in a one room hut with his parents and eventually sister. His parents were both farmer workers that were struggling financially because of the famine. As a result of the tight living quarters Andrei slept in the same bed as his parents. The close sleeping conditions lead to violence and humiliation because Andrei was a chronic bed wetter, believed to be a side effect of his brain lesions. Every time he had an accident his mother, Anna, would beat him as his punishment. In addition to the trauma of the beatings, Andrei Chikatilo also had to deal with the emotion trauma when at the early age of five, his mother told him that his older brother, Stepan, was taken by the neighbors and eaten before he was born.
As World War II prolonged Chikatilo’s father, Roman, was drafted to fight for USSR. His father was gone for many months because he was injured and then captured by the Germans. Throughout the war Chikatilo lived through the brutal effects of the Blitzkrieg. Of which, one effect being the incineration of their hut, which he and his mother were forced to watch. It was during the time that his father was away in which his mother had his sister, Tatyana. But then when his father retuned from the war he was not given any reward, but instead was punished for being captured and surrendering to the Germans.
When Chikatilo was about 15 or 16 he had his first sexual experience. This occurred when he leaped on to a 12 year-old girl and wrestled her to the ground. It was while his was pinning her to the ground and she was resisting that he was sexually aroused and ejaculated.
Later on in life Chikatilo was taken pity upon by his sister because of his lack of success with women. Tatyana then processed to set her brother up with a friend named Fayina, whom he later married. When he was with Fayina, Andrei first discovered his problem that is now known as erectile dysfunction. Although he was unable to get an erection, Andrei and Fayina still conceived and had two children. The first was a daughter who they named Lyudmilla and the second a son named Yuri.
With his family Chikatilo had a seemingly normal life. He received a degree in Russian literature and became a teacher. Although at the school he was teased and harassed by the students because he was odd and shy. As the result of the bullying he was scared of his students which caused him to lose respect from them and not be able to
control his classroom. He ended up molesting some of his students and losing all of every teaching job he ever held. When he was fired from his last teaching job he found his next work at a factory.
His job at the factory opened up the doors for his murder career. This was enabled when he was forced to take the bus or train to work at the factory because it was so far away. It was at the bus stations or train depots where he found many of his victims.
